rain AND sun
even the sensei's brush hesitates
above the ink-wet parchment
rain-timpani ended
sun bursts into solo
dripping leaves pitter and patter

raven trickster

raven calls
red sun hangs on horizon
caught once again

coyote trickster

coyote bays
full moon returns
fooled once again
full moon finds me
through my skylight
please, do that trick again!

Swiftly pulling out his emotional compass, he reconnoitered the social landscape. Too late, he was already lost!

geese land
the green field rests
until tomorrow

(in reply to @haikuhabits)

raindrop meditation

raindrops
live only for the falling
dewdrops only for the day
wisps of blue
drift across my skylight
amidst the swirling clouds
sunshine fills the room
with the sound of
no birds chirping

sad puddles
last night's frolicking rain
what happened?!
thirteen haiku written
thirteen blackbirds flying
and that's where the similarity ends!
the pond full
the rain stops
any questions?

Friday, February 6, 2009

rainsong stops
only fragrances still fall
and birds all atwitter
rain
jackhammers on the pavement
piledrives in the fields

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

tent flaps
wandering in the wind
even a gypsy must rest

Monday, February 2, 2009

thirteen haiku written
thirteen blackbirds fly
both carried by the wind
into the crimson sky
river washed stones
pyramid of worries
who has stacked you here?

recovery haiku#5

my morning friends: stand tall and shower
my afternoon friends joke and laugh
i close the evening's door and smile

recovery haiku #4

this evening pain is not this morning's pain
this evening sun is not this morning's sun
i sing "hurrah"

recovery haiku #3

this blue dragonfly
out of place, wrong time of year
and yet i want him still

recovery haiku #2

before return: white ceiling, blue skies, gray wind
after return: white ceiling, blue skies, gray wind

sakura sakura

autumn leaves
gypsies camp
underneath the trees

post-op haiku

white ceiling
blue skies
who trapped this bird within?

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

pre-op haiku

zen mind
empty mind
compass spinning freely

Monday, January 26, 2009

"entropy, a parameter of decay"
pshaw! we spit in your face
disorderly conduct
North South East West
time for a new direction
the compass spins
blackbirds sitting on a branch
new moon sends them flying
my thoughts are scattered

gusting wind
black birds scatter
leafless tree

Let's get Boolean ~ or not.
compass on the table
untouched the arrow shifts
door hangs by its hinges
No matter how much I shake the compass, it seems to have just one direction in mind. Pig-headed, insolent - you call this guidance?!
the clock moves forward
all hands pointing
at my decision
I move the compass again, searching for the right direction - but things just keep changing. Ah, this looks better.
this turn of phrase
I can't resist
my haiku pounces

the cat and the moth

silly cat
in the dark
how do you find your wings?

toyon tree

silver skies, gray rain, red berries.
no wings? no song?

minimal haiku

wet
dew
drops
raindrops knock
windows open
come in!
raindrops whimpering on the skylights
I knock wistfully on the window
yes, come out, come out and join us!

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Can't figure this compass out, heading just keeps changing. What's the decision here?!
woke up searching for a fog poem
oh, outside my window
just add words
first light ~ it's hard to be prepared for a day you've never seen before

wrapped around itself
curling in the whirling snow
Raven's mocking cry
where is my touchstone
she thought inquisitively
so i can haiku

leaves falling on rain
now returning to their trees
in sky blue puddles
Elegant longing song, played on a fiddle, taking us briefly out of time. Old predictable story, plays predictably on our emotions. Old maps.

Day's timid rays of gray push away the Huaka'ipo "night marchers" - night reluctantly recoils - Molokini whales breach gray waves in triumph.

(Wailea 17Jan09)
we press these two sounds together
wind and rain
and the lightning claps

The Pacific stormed on Maui. Magnificent, self-absorbed the elements raged, thundered, lit crashing waves - our presence irrelevant, incidental.
